Are You Making These 3 Lubrication Mistakes?

by | Oct 20, 2014 | Bearing Solutions

Are you using bearings that require re-lubrication?

If so, you understand that the potential damage caused by lubrication mistakes goes well beyond the bearings themselves. You put other parts at risk, and if the affected equipment requires downtime, you’re damaging your company’s bottom line, too.

Make sure you aren’t making these common bearing lubrication mistakes!

3 COMMON BEARING LUBRICATION MISTAKES

1. IMPROPER LUBRICANT

Make sure you are using the proper type of lubricant for your specific bearing and application.

Using the wrong lubrication could destroy your bearings. Read our list of common lubricants and common applications including:

  • General Grease (NLGI #2)

  • Synthetic Grease

  • Solid Lubricants & Oils

  • Graphite (Dry or Solid Lubricant)

  • Specialized Plating

2. OVER OR UNDER LUBRICATION

The proper amount of lubrication is also critical. Lubrication failure or complete lack of lubrication can cause bearings to fail. And over-greasing can also be damaging by leading to high operating temperatures, collapsed seals, and in the case of greased electric motors, energy loss and failures.

3. ONLY USING A TIME-BASED LUBRICATION SCHEDULE

Decrease your bearing failures by incorporating ultrasound technology into your maintenance arsenal.

With ultrasound you don’t have to rely on a time-based lubrication schedule alone. Ultrasound technology is relatively inexpensive, can be used in many environments, and can be learned easily.
